Review of Howland Center, Ohio

A great NE Ohio township.
Star Rating - 10/9/2017
I've lived in the west coast (Silicon Valley) and east cost (NY), but I really like it here. Don't get me wrong, I like Cali weather and beaches, and the Adirondack mountains of update NY, but there's a lot to like about NE OHIO. Howland Center is just a little over an hour from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh, which make for great day trips. Columbus is about 3 hours; Washington DC 5 hours (just visited this weekend); and Niagara Falls (also visited this Summer) is about 3.5 hours. There are local lakes (some are great for swimming and kayaking). There are enough shops, local restaurants and things to do to keep one very active. There are local festivals run by Mill Creek Park and the many small towns. A family favorite is the Apple Butter Festival in nearby Burton. Howland schools are excellent. Having lived in cities before, I enjoy traffic-less commutes. I hardly ever run into traffic, and the average commute time is about 10 to 15 minutes. Takes me about that time to work. The Summers and Winters are mild. The last 2 winters were extremely mild as I am averaging plowing my drive way only twice per season. Spring and Fall are beautiful-perfect actually. The people are really down to earth. There's something about that mid-western sensibility that helps different backgrounds-even political ones-get a long so well. Ohio is generally split between Republicans and Democrats and of course few independents that fill up the middle aisle. Oh, I forgot to mention the absurdly excellent housing prices. One can easily find a 3bed/2bath house, with a basement and garage, for about 75,000. And I mean easily. That's why the region has one of the highest home ownership rate (without a mortgage) in the country. I'd say people are generally happy to live here. Oh, and not that many natural disasters. No earthquakes, no cataclysmic snow storms and no hurricanes. Can't beat that. If you are thinking about moving to the area, welcome home!
